A Guide to Relocating your Pet

Your pet is a treasured member of the family, so you want to be sure that the move to their new overseas home is safe, comfortable and stress-free. Here are some pointers to help with your pet’s relocation.

International Travel Requirements

Ask the consulate in your destination country about the legislation, special requirements and limitations for importing animals

  1. Is the destination country a member of the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS)?
  2. What vaccinations, treatments or medical tests are required for entry?
  3. Is an Export Health Certificate or import licence required?
  4. Does your pet need to be micro chipped?
  5. Are there any age restrictions?
  6. Do you need to be present when your pet clears customs?
  7. Does your pet have to go into quarantine on arrival and if so, for how long?
  8. What are the associated costs?

Medical Considerations

Prior to travelling, a vet must declare your pet medically fit. A vet will also ensure your animal has any necessary medication for the journey, update travel documents and issue compulsory health certificates.

Travel Arrangements

You can transport your pet internationally by car, ferry, plane or even train, but with all modes, there are factors to consider.

A journey over land will undoubtedly be longer than by plane, but transportation requirements are stricter for air journeys. Be aware that some countries only permit animal transportation with an approved company on an authorised route.

For flying, take the time to find an airline with a pet friendly reputation and research airline pet travel regulations and policies well in advance. Pet friendly airlines properly insulate, pressurise and control the climate of cargo holds for animals to aid sleep during the journey. Check the availability of flights for your pet thoroughly as not all flights allow animal transportation within the normal flight schedule, and try to book direct flights in non-peak hours.

If you are transporting your pet by boat, make special arrangements for entry to the car deck for food and water refills, medicating, toilet breaks and exercise.

A Comfortable Journey

Whether by land, sea, or air, the aim is to make the journey comfortable and stress-free for your pet:

  1. Do local holidays coincide with your travel date? This could slow down the importation process.
  2. Make sure the travel crate is large enough for your pet to comfortably stand, turn around and lie stretched out in the carrier. For air travel, pet carriers must meet the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animals Regulations.
  3. Place items that smell and look familiar in your pet’s carrier (like toys or a blanket).
  4. Label your pet and carrier in compliance with legislation and ensure your contact details are clearly visible both inside and outside of your pet’s carrier.
  5. Avoid feeding your pet directly before travelling, but make sure your animal drinks plenty of water.
  6. Ask your vet for advice about sedating pets; the side effects are unpredictable and many airlines will refuse transportation.

In Your Host Country

When you are looking for somewhere to live ensure that your rental property allows pets and prepare a letter of recommendation for your pet if necessary.

Register with a local vet and pass on your pet’s documentation and enquire about local requirements for animal ownership e.g. taxes or licences.

Be sure to spend lots of extra time with your pet and keep outdoor animals inside until they are familiar with their new surroundings.

Pet Travel Agency or Relocation Service

Professional services are available to take care of the relocation of your pet. There are many components to relocating your pet and often the process is lengthy. Hiring specialists can save you a lot of time and effort in terms of research and appointments.

A pet relocation service will serve as a focal point for all aspects of your pet’s relocation and normally offers a door-to-door service. The company will research importation requirements for your destination on your behalf, arrange documentation, medical checks and treatments, make travel bookings, and organise boarding if necessary.

Engaging professionals also provides you with a clear overview of costs in advance to allow you to budget effectively. Get your free pet relocation quotes with ExpatFinder.com!
