High End Health Insurance: Is It Worth it?

“You get what you pay for!” That’s why you shouldn’t choose a company that charges far lower premiums than others do. But does this mean high end insurance is a better alternative? Here are a few hard questions you ought to ask before you deci

High End Health InsuranceIs health insurance much too expensive?

The answer to that question would definitely be “being sick is much more expensive than health insurance.”  Unfortunately most people don’t realize this until they are diagnosed with something much more serious than a common cold.  For instance cost of a biopsy would include the doctor, the lab, shipping costs plus meds all of which add up to a huge financial liability.  When you rethink the seriousness of the financial burden that illness brings on you will no longer classify health insurance as a “cost”.

Why should you pay so much for health insurance and end up wasting it?
Isn’t that the point of insurance?  Ever heard of someone getting car insurance without getting in to a car accident?  That is what most of us who argue about why we have to pay for health insurance when we don’t use it.  Ask someone who didn’t have health insurance when he or she was diagnosed with a major illness and you will probably think differently.

Why pay a high premium?

No matter how much you spend on getting well or rather at least not getting worse, insurance is worth it.  In fact it is the best money that you could spend.  Imagine, you need a brain scan.  With health insurance you pay one tenth of the cost of the scan.  Some of us would say “we still had to pay one tenth” but then again when you look at what you would have had to pay one tenth does seem like what it really is a fraction.

What about a risk-benefit analysis?

A thorough analysis of risks and benefits before you opt for high end insurance is a must.  If you have small children frequent visits to the doctor and prescriptions but you don’t have the money to pay high premiums then you should do the math and talk to your insurance provider to see what works best for you.  In most cases high deductible plans would seem attractive to someone who uses the benefits very little.

Does high end insurance mean more coverage?

Choosing the wrong insurance policy could prove to be a disastrous financial decision.  Take time to study and consider the fine print before you pick a policy.  Don’t equate high premiums with better coverage.  Instead consider your needs; are you for example a diabetic?  Are you pregnant or looking to start a family soon?  Do you have children? What are their needs?  Is your spouse asthmatic?  If you personalize your policy and get the coverage that you’re looking for you will be able to see if the finances add up.

What about overseas health care and costs?

Health care systems and costs vary based on many issues like availability of drugs, equipment, medical professionals to mention a few.  While most insurance policies provide some overseas insurance coverage do your own research and see if you are well protected and covered for abroad.

On a lighter note if you are healthy you must appreciate the privilege of being insurable and if something unfortunate were to happen your health insurance whatever the cost should be there to take of you.
