How Can I Find English Speaking Doctors Abroad?

Are you traveling or moving abroad? In most cases finding quality health care facilities abroad is not much of a problem, depending of course on which country you are moving or traveling to. Even finding a doctor or a physician might not be a problem.

Here are some places where you can find English speaking doctors abroad…

Your Consulate/ Embassy

If you come from an English speaking country, your embassy and consulate maintains referral lists from which you can choose English speaking doctors or general practitioners. It is important to note that the embassy or consulate will not officially recommend individual doctors on the list.

The Yellow Pages

Another easy way of finding English speaking doctors in your new city is looking in the “doctors and clinics” section listed in the “yellow pages” of the local telephone book. This is a good place to look as physicians listed here often mention their qualifications and indicate if they have received specialty training in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or other medically advanced countries.

Referrals

One of the best and most reliable ways to find a doctor abroad is asking friends, relatives and colleagues to refer you to a general practitioner or physician who can speak English or your native language.

Travel Insurance/Assistance Companies

If you have a travel health policy then the 24-hour hotline number will lead you to an assistance center that can give a physician referral. International SOS Assistance and Shoreland, Inc. (publisher of Travax EnCompass) are companies have a list of worldwide medical facilities and contact information and will connect you with corporate and travel physicians, for a fee.

International Medical Clinics

In recent times there has been a spurt in the number of international medical clinics that serve the needs of travelers, expatriates and employees of multinational corporations. These clinics are usually a part of a chain; for example, International SOS and MEDEX, found in most major cities across the globe, they are the best place to tap for any medical problem.

IAMAT

The International Association for Assistance to Travelers (IAMAT) is a Canadian foundation that publishes a booklet that lists hospitals and English-speaking physicians who have agreed to adhere to a standard schedule of fees. However, physicians are not listed by specialty. Get in touch with IAMAT (www.iamat.org), 417 Center Street, Lewiston, NY 14092; 716-754-4883; in Canada, 40 Regal Road, Guelph, Ontario, N1K 1B5; 519-836-0102. There is no charge, but a donation is encouraged.

Cardholder Assistance

Another good source to tap would be the 24-hour emergency medical hotlines run by credit card companies. These services are usually available to those in the “gold card” or “platinum card” category. This way you gain access to:

English-speaking doctors and dentists, hospitals with English-speaking staff members, arrange for replacement of prescription medicines, and will be able to charter an air ambulance.
