Is Boarding School Right for My Child?

As an expatriate parent, sending your child to a boarding school might be an option that you may consider at some point of time.

Simply deciding to do what other people may have done in this regard is not the right way to approach the matter.  Consider the following points to make your own decision…

Age Factor

Your child’s age is an important factor that must be considered when you make a decision to put him or her in boarding school. Very young children deserve care and support from their parents and immediate family. Putting very young children in boarding school is not a great idea.

Very young children will suffer from separation anxiety and may withdraw in to a shell if they are forced to go to a boarding school. This may result in problems as they grow and the impact may stay with them in their adult life.

Nannies & Support Staff

If you have a support system in place and are able to have people around to help you bring up your child, then keeping your child with you is a better option.

If you and your spouse are working and giving time to your children is a problem then you could consider hiring a nanny or support staff to help you along the way. Other options include getting a tutor to help your children with their studies. Enrolling your kids for recreational activities like sports, music, art and language courses will also keep them occupied.

No amount of facilities and activities at a boarding school can make up for care giving by family so if you have a good education system where you presently reside then enrolling your child there and hiring help might be a better idea.

Evaluate Local Schooling Options

Careful consideration of the local schooling options before sending your kids to a boarding school is highly recommended. Visit some schools, ask friends and colleagues for references and talk to teachers and heads of institutions before you decide on which course you would like to take.
If you choose boarding school rather than the local schools, be sure to run a complete check. Tour through the facilities, find out exactly what your child’s schedule would consist of and ensure you know the proper visiting hours or days. You do not want to leave your child with just anyone, make sure the school will be contributing something to your child’s development they would not otherwise be offered.

What Are Your Job Demands

Frequent travel, a grueling work schedule, long hours away from home- if all or any of these are a part of your work life then that would leave you with very little time for your children. In that case the most obvious choice would be to send your kids to boarding school

The Pros

Boarding schools offer better academic and personal growth opportunities to kids than staying at home with parents who are grappling with career demands. Personalized attention from teachers who live on campus and a host of activities that keep kids from becoming couch potatoes are the plus points of a boarding school. The choice rests with you and your personal situation.
