Managing International Travel Insurance for Expats and Their Families
The value of good travel insurance can sometimes be lost on those that get caught up in the excitement and activity of international travel.
Expats that are younger may feel that having youth on their side negates the need for additional travel coverage, while more established expats with families and their own private insurance may not be aware that their insurance will not cover them when once they leave their home country. In the event that disaster befalls you, this oversight can be costly and you may be left alone without any kind of assistance.
There are a wide variety of travel insurance providers, and a short-term policy can be surprisingly affordable. Depending on your destination, the number and needs of the individuals in your family and your intended activities while you are abroad, many policies can be customized to protect you and your loved ones in the event of accident, injury or illness. Keep in mind that travel insurance policies are generally short term, and you are required to disclose any pre-existing conditions or illnesses prior to issuance of your policy. If you fail to do so, the insurer may cancel the policy if such conditions are brought to light during your travels. Your travel insurance is designed to cover injuries and illnesses incurred during the course of your journeys, so make sure you fully understand exactly what activities are covered by your policy. For example, if you plan on skiing or snowboarding, make sure your policy includes provisions for airlifting from the mountains if you are hurt. Before leaving, you should also check to see if you already have some kind of coverage you might not know about. European residents have some basic coverage compliments of the EHIC within the boundaries of the EU.
There are a few details of acquiring and using your travel insurance that are important to remember. First of all, make sure you purchase your policy BEFORE you depart. Acquiring a travel policy after you have already gone out of the country is much more difficult, and can arouse suspicions in the insurer. Also bear in mind that your behavior will be taken into consideration when the policy is being paid out. For instance, if you have been drinking or using drugs when your injury takes place, the chances are high that the insurance company will not honor your policy. If your trip is for humanitarian purposes that might include volunteer work and manual labor, you should double check to make sure that your policy covers any injuries you might incur while working.
Traveling for expats and their families can be a wonderful opportunity, but doing so without the proper insurance can be dangerous. Not only do you risk your health and safety, but your financial well-being can take a major hit if you are hospitalized without proper coverage. Remember to pay careful attention to the small print before agreeing to any insurance contract – the details in such agreements can make all the difference.
