Vaccination
Depending on the country you are moving to vaccination is a logical preventive measure that you must opt for. Check with your doctor and get the necessary advice at least 4-6 weeks ahead of travel. If you are going to be working with animals then vaccination for rabies is also recommended.
Take one thing at a time
Moving abroad involves a good deal of running about and exertion. Attempting to cram too many things in to your day will leave you exhausted and stressed out. You need to plan and prioritize instead of trying to do too much all at once.
Be a good observer
Watch how locals adapt to the climate and learn how you can make simple lifestyle changes to lead a healthy and stress free life. For instance if you are moving to a place where the climate is hot, shops and establishments open early and people rest in the afternoons when the heat is at its peak. Little things like walking slowly and leaving home early will help you retain energy.
Get adequate protection from mosquitoes
Mosquitoes and bugs are a big menace and screening windows is the best way to keep them out. Keep a stock of mosquito coils or electronic vaporizers at home and switch to wearing long sleeved shirts and trousers in mosquito infested areas.
Protection from the Sun
Getting a tan may be considered “cool” but think of the damaging long term effects excessive exposure to the Sun could have on your skin. Use a good sun-protector on your face and body; wear long, loose, cotton clothing and sun glasses with a wide brimmed hat. Avoid spending long hours in the Sun as it will only prove to be exhausting.
Pollution
If you are allergic to dust or even otherwise pollution can pose a big health hazard. Wear a nose mask to protect yourself when traveling by public transport or walking the streets in highly polluted cities.
Find a Good Doctor & Local Hospital
Identify a local doctor and hospital, preferably before you get there. Ask friends and colleagues for references. You may want to check the facilities available at the free government hospitals before you decide to use them as they may not be very good in all countries.
Carry Your Medication
At least in the initial stages of transition, stock up on adequate supplies of your medication. When you get there you could start locating pharmacies to buy your medical supplies. Ask your doctor to give you a list of alternative medication as the ones you are using may not be available in your place of residence.
Water
Drink bottled water and make sure you carry your own water with you in the car or your bag whenever you travel for work or otherwise. Drinking caffeinated drinks and alcohol will dehydrate you especially in warm climate. To avoid headaches, urinary tract problems and similar health concerns make sure you top up your fluid intake through the day.
Food
Wash all fresh fruits, vegetables and meats with clean, drinking water before cooking and consuming them. To avoid tummy trouble do not eat raw or undercooked food. Always eat freshly cooked food and as far as possible avoid street food.
Alcohol
Consumption of alcohol is often considered a part of socializing at work or unwinding after a hard day. Don’t over do the drinking more so if you live alone or suffer from heart disease or are prone to depression.
Exercise
Regular exercise is preventive health measure the benefits of which are often underestimated. Walk, jog, ride a bicycle or swim at least three times a week to keep fit. Do not lift weights unsupervised. Learn relaxation techniques like yoga and tai-chi from a certified instructor to deal with health and stress related problems.
Stress
Work pressures and moving to a new environment is bound to be stressful for most people. A good network of family, friends or a local expat group will help you share your problems and concerns.
Air-Conditioning
Stiff joints, insomnia and symptoms of neuralgia are just some of the effects of excessive use of air-conditioning. Leaving the doors and windows open during the day and using fans will help reduce the adverse effects.
On a lighter note, staying connected with friends and family, listening to music and indulging in moments of solitude are just some more ways of staying healthy and stress free during the transition abroad.
