Mental Health Tips for Expats

Moving abroad comes with a lot of adjustment on your part. A whole new world with different culture, aspirations and people is what you are bound to encounter in your new country. Your mental health is as important as your physical health.

No matter how independent we think we are, we all need people to support us from time to time.  Your family and friends are there to help you whenever the need arises.  Simply having someone to talk to about your concerns is a big step towards feeling lighter.  If your family moves with you, then your support system is right there in your home.  If not then a calling card to speak with your family and friends is a small investment that you will have to make. 

Eating a meal together with your family at least once a day gives you time to share your experiences and learn from theirs.  A trip to the mall or coffee with your friends is time to unwind. 

Join an Expat Group

One of the first few things you should do once you move abroad is to check which expat groups are in existence in your city.  If you can’t find a group of people from your own country then at least those from neighboring countries are the next best option.  Not only will you find such groups helpful for social networking, but they will also be your knowledge bank for tips on traveling, hospitals, shopping and so on.  Membership of such groups comes with perks like meet ups, travel and sharing pot luck; just what you need to feel like you belong in a foreign land.

Be Prepared For a Change in Mindset

Perhaps the best way to adapt to your new country is to be prepared for a change in mindset.  Connotations of time, privacy, social interactions and work culture are likely to be very different from what you were used to at home.  Read up on books, articles or simply look up information on the internet ahead of your move.  This will help you to understand what you will be dealing with and devise strategies to accept so many changes.

Networking Tools

Use networking tools to find support groups of like minded people.  Interacting with people who share the same concerns as you do can prove to be liberating while helping you realize that you are not alone.  Professional and social networks can prove to be a great source of comfort provided you use them with due diligence.

Use Technology to Keep In Touch

While most of us complain that it has taken the human touch out of communication, the fact remains that technology is an intrinsic part of our lives.  An internet connection and a mobile phone aid some interaction with the people who matter irrespective of where they are.  
 
Don’t be afraid to seek help

If you have trouble coping with life abroad, don’t be afraid to seek professional help.  Sometimes depression can be serious and you will need clinical treatment which your friends and family cannot provide.  A counselor or a psychologist has the training and experience to help you so go ahead and ask for it.

Some Rorm of Relaxation

Some form of relaxation like yoga, breathing exercises or meditation for a few minutes everyday will help you stay calm and balanced.  Any form of sport, art or music can assuage any feelings of anger, anxiety or depression that you may be experiencing.  It will also help you direct your energy towards some creative pursuit. 

Associate With a Cause

Serving the less fortunate among us is a great way of making a difference to the world that we live in.  Teaching at the community centre, reading to the blind or elderly, working with orphans or terminally ill patients and helping women who are victims of physical and mental abuse are all some ways in which you can serve others.  In the process you will also realize how small your problems really are when compared to what others are going through. 

Bonding with people, discussing your problems and getting involved with some activity other than your work will help you adjust to your new location.  You have to try it to see the difference!

If you are still feeling overwhelmed or depressed seek medical advice. You might even be able to find a counseler from your own country.
