• Packing Tips
Always ensure that you pack a musical instrument with due care. Do not forget to include instructions for repackaging and handling in the instrument case. This is particularly useful in case the case is opened for inspection. Your presence at the time of inspection will help you make sure that the security staff repacks the instrument safely.
• Air Line Travel Tips
If you are traveling by air then remember to call your airline and find out their rules for traveling with musical instruments. Several airlines have worked with professional associations of musicians to formulate guidelines for traveling with musical instruments. Most airlines permit musical instruments as carry on or checked baggage. Brass instruments may be packed in checked baggage while stringed instruments must be included as carry on items if they are with in carrier size limits.
If an instrument is too large, stringed or fragile then airlines permit you to book an extra seat for it. Paying for the extra seat will prove to be a lot less expensive than a damaged instrument. Some sturdy packaging, straps to secure it to a seat if need be, a hard case to protect the instrument and informing the travel agent that you will be carrying an instrument on board is all you need to do to travel safely with the instrument intact.
Most importantly you must arrive at least half an hour before the airline’s check in time.
Security officers may subject the instrument to a physical check or an x-ray and it is recommended that you remain present at this time.
• Maintenance Tools
If you are carrying any maintenance tools like bows, brushes, reeds and fluids while traveling with musical instruments, always report the same when you check in. This will help eliminate any delay that you may experience while going through the security check later.
• Excess Baggage Charges
Heavy musical instruments are likely to attract an excess baggage charge so be prepared on that front.
• Find a Moving Company
If you are using the services of a moving company then allowing them to pack and move any musical instruments that you may have is a better choice. You can always check their credentials and experience with moving musical instruments before you decide on which company to use.
