Making life abroad easier with ExpatFinder, the comparison website for expats around the world.

Options for Staying in Touch With Relatives Abroad

Staying in touch with your family after relocating abroad is one area of concern for everyone who moves far from home. Here are some easy ways for expats to connect with their relatives back home…

Snail Mail

Though email, telephone, chat rooms and Skype are the most technologically savvy methods of staying in touch, there is nothing to beat the allure of a hand written letter, post card or birthday card. This will be especially appreciated by those who aren’t so confident in their technological ability.

Online Chat Rooms

Most people use email to keep in touch with family and friends back home; however, chatting online is the next best thing to talking on the phone. Sign up with AOL’s Instant Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk or Google Chat- all free ways to stay in touch.

Social Media Networks

Social networking is another great way of keeping in touch with family and friends. You can keep them posted about what’s happening in your life with status updates, photos and yes…there’s also an option of chatting with contacts right there.

Internet Telephony

Voice over internet protocol (VOIP), Internet telephony or Internet Phone services are easy-to-use services and generally do not require the purchase of any new equipment. A phone or a computer is all that you need to reach more than 100 countries anytime from anywhere.  But remember to sign up with the few credible operators for the service.

Skype is a software program that allows users to call other Skype clients direct from their computers for free. If both users have a webcam or other video input then video calls can be made, though some countries may prohibit this function. Skype apps are also available for Blackberry, iOS and Android phones, though usually there is a fee to use Skype on your phone.

Vonage is a VOIP phone service wherein a proprietary adapter can be used for a monthly fee that is prepaid annually. This fee allows users to make unlimited calls to landlines in over 60 countries as well as cell phones (in some countries), and your existing phone number can be transferred to your Vonage service. Voicemail and visual voicemail and a method for Smartphone users to save on their long-distance calls are also available.

Phone Calls

Phone calls are definitely more personal but also the most expensive way to keep in touch. An international calling card is another option that is simple, easy-to-use and cheap.
Reduced rates on international dialing are on offer nearly everywhere (especially on Saturday and Sunday). If you live in a rented accommodation request your landlord to install IDD/SLI services before you move in.

Your family might be able to request a 'designated country' for which they get special discounts. This depends on which long-distance service your family members subscribe to back home, you can tell them to make your new country that designated country.

Callback services (based primarily in the US and Europe) save money by originating your phone call overseas where international connect rates are very cost effective.

Services like Rebtel (easy-to-use service requiring no installation procedure) give you the benefit of cheap international calling rates. You can use any landline or mobile phone to call across the world while enjoying the benefit of several offers, discounts and free calls between countries.
