Selecting an Overseas School for Your Child

Selecting an overseas school for your child might be a difficult task. A number of factors are required to be considered while making a choice…

Your Destination

Depending on which country you're moving to, your choices may be limited to a few options. Notwithstanding the number of schools available, the most important factor is that the school matches your child's needs and expectations.

Initial Research

Once you carry out the initial research, the next step is to ask around, just like you would if you were choosing a new school in your home country. The best people to ask are your new employer or in case of a transfer, your current employer for information and for a contact in the city or town where you will be stationed in the future.

If you're moving on your own, contact the potential school directly and ask for references. You could also use e-mail enquiries to get instant information even before you arrive. If possible, try and meet other parents when you get there.

Questions to Ask

Once you've gathered the initial information, it's time to interview the potential new school. Here are some pointers to help you frame your questionnaire…

Attendance

•    How many students are currently attending this school?
•    How many countries, cultures, and religions do they represent?

Atmosphere

•    Are parents encouraged to participate in the school activities and affairs?
•    Are students happy to come to school?
•    What does the school emphasize- education or extra-curricular activities or both?
•    What is the school's vision and philosophy?
•    What are the school’s goals for the future with regard to curriculum design and input for students?

Curriculum

•    How does the curriculum compare with your child's current educational facility?
•    Has the school been accredited? If Yes, by whom and how?
•    What are the standards followed by the school and who ensures they are monitored?

Staff and Administration

•    How long has the principal or head been at the helm of affairs?
•    What is his/her background and experience?
•    How is the staff selected?
•    What is the philosophy of the teaching staff? Do they encourage participation by students and parents?
•    What is the teacher-student ratio?

Practical Information

•    When was the school established?
•    What are the facilities on offer?
•    Are the facilities well maintained?
•    What sort of recreation is available?
•    What about library, computer labs, science labs, research facilities and access to information?
•    Do they provide meals and transport?
•    What sort of extra-curricular activities are offered? And more importantly, do they match what your child needs?
•    What about tutoring programs and counseling services?

Tuition

•    How much is the tuition?
•    What does it include?
•    How much does the fee increase each year?
•    How much will it cost my child as he/she gets older?

Once you complete this stage, visit the school in person (if possible) before you enroll your child. See for yourself how children are taught and behave and what kind of community- this is the best way to ensure the school is right for your child.
