The Forex Market and Foreign Exchange Brokers

The foreign exchange market (known as the Forex) is a complex resource allowing for the exchange of international currencies for the purposes of trade, business and personal finance.

Currency exchange is integral in the process of international trade, and allows for the open transfer of goods and services from vastly different regions of the globe.  International investment relies heavily upon this market, as foreign investments are frequently made across countries that utilize varying forms of currency.  For example, a US consumer may choose to invest in the Japanese market.  The Forex market allows the US dollar to be easily converted to Japanese yen, and vice-versa.

Why Use Forex?

One of the biggest assets of the foreign exchange market is the potential for profit by doing business in foreign currency.  Currency is liquid, making the movement of investments easy to accomplish.  This can also be highly profitable if high-rate currency is converted into a lower-rate counterpart – suddenly resulting in the appearance of greater value.  For example, $1 is roughly equal to 44 Indian rupees.  This means that investments could go farther and pay out larger that domestic trades.

This aspect of currency exchange can be highly beneficial for those who relocate from the US to foreign soil.  The exchange of American currency for the local currency can allow an individual’s income to stretch much farther than it would in their native country.  Also, any American domestic investments that are maintained post-relocation will produce larger payout when converted to the new currency – assuming, of course, that the exchange rate is high.

What Are Foreign Exchange Brokers?

The business of foreign currency exchange is executed daily on a massive scale, and the scale of business is determined by varying degrees of access to the market.  In the top tier of exchange are international banks and commercial companies.  These types of businesses specialize in international trade and speculation, and are used primarily by national agencies and dominant traders.

For business conducted on a more personal scale, there are non-bank foreign exchange companies.  These companies serve primarily to ease the process of travel, relocation and international small business.  They allow for the exchange of currency coming from personal income or private business that crosses national borders.  Rather than dealing in speculation and virtual money (which is generally the medium of the banks and commercial enterprises), these exchange companies generally handle more concrete transactions resulting in tangible assets.  For example, a student from the US has decided to travel abroad in Europe.  Their parents have sent them money for living expenses in the form of US dollars.  That student can take the money to an exchange broker to be converted into Euros – the local currency.

The use of an exchange broker is vital for anyone conducting business across international lines.  It is advisable to research local brokers prior to selection, as the intricacies of currency exchange can be manipulated by a dishonest merchant.  In order to “get the most for your money”, make sure that the reputation and business practices of your broker of choice are above reproach, and stay abreast of frequently used exchange rates
