Making life abroad easier with ExpatFinder, the comparison website for expats around the world.

The Main Issues Surrounding Expat Healthcare Planning

The United States and most Western countries have quality healthcare services available to their citizens.

Health InsuranceWhen moving overseas, most expats express concern about their future healthcare. In some cases, there is nothing to worry about, as some countries have comparable medical facilities. However, individuals should take certain steps when moving overseas to ensure that their international health insurance needs are addressed.

Preparation

Before leaving, there are some considerations that should be made. The most important of these is in regards to insurance. Many expats have private health insurance, which will cover them overseas. Check with your current insurance provider to ensure that your policy has such a provision. If it does not, you will need to research policies with one of the many companies that offer insurance to expats.

Before researching different options, consider who will need to be covered, which services are covered, under which circumstances the plan will be valid, the cost of premiums or co-pays, any exclusions, and if the company is available on the weekends or holidays.

Gather together health documents to take with you, including: medical records on any current or ongoing conditions, vaccination and immunization records and clearly labeled medicines with any required paperwork. Make sure that your immunizations are all up-to-date, as some places require record of such prior to entry. Carry with you at all times a card that provides contact information for your medical insurance as well as emergency contact phone numbers. It is wise to use the local language and include a local contact for quick assistance should an emergency arise.

Travel Insurance Options

Basic travelers insurance is a great option for students or unemployed individuals who are using their savings to travel. This insurance will protect against emergency situations, such as a broken leg or serious illness. It does not cover minor conditions, like a cold, nor routine procedures, such as dental work. If opting for travel insurance, research various policies – especially in regards to payment, duration of services, and coverage – before choosing a plan.

Research the level of care that will be available to you abroad. Some locations do not offer the high level of healthcare or suitable hospitals that are available in the United States. You may need to reconsider your desired location, particularly if you have a current medical condition that requires continuous treatment.

Review information about your host country at The World Health Organization website to determine potential health risks. Some areas have higher potential for disease or other health problems, which will need to be taken into account prior to your relocation. You may require new immunizations to protect against diseases that are common in your host country, but not in the United States.

Verify that any prescription medications that you require are available and are permitted in your host country. If you require regular medical attention – be it for an ongoing condition or a special medical circumstance – then check to make sure that you can obtain that care after your move.

Most importantly, be certain to visit your doctor prior to leaving for your host country. Get a check-up and any immunizations necessary for your trip. Get an extra pair of eyeglasses in case yours get lost or break, and visit the dentist for a cleaning and check-up. While you will have access to some type of health insurance as an expat, you want to make sure that you are in good health prior to leaving your home country.
