Tips for Cutting Your Moving Costs

Moving house is not only a stressful activity but also an expensive one. This is even truer if you are moving abroad.

Investing time and money in the process is essential. Using the services of a professional moving company will make the process hassle free but will set you back quite a bit as well.
Here are some tips to cut your moving costs…

Determine a Budget

It is very important to maintain a budget of the operational costs of moving to a new location. List down the expenses likely to be incurred including boxes, cartons, packing material, sheets of paper and plastic required for packing, tape, ropes, etc and charges to be paid to moving companies. Add around 20-30% to your budget to provide for any unforeseen expenses that may be incurred.

Self Help

If you don’t mind packing and organizing things then self packing is the way to go. If you decide to pack yourself then work with a plan.  You will be more organized and get things done the way you want that way. Stock up on packaging material like boxes, tape and filling material like paper and old clothes, towels and napkins before you start packing. Choosing inexpensive packaging material may not be the best alternative if you don’t want to end up with boxes giving way under the weight of packed goods.

Time Bound Goals

Make a schedule and divide it in to targets for weekly and daily packing. The best way is to pack one room at a time and identify unused items that you’ll not be packing first. Mark every box with its contents and the room you would like this to be in your new home, steps such as these are life savers when you unpack.

Involve the Family

Involve your family in the packing process and you will discover how many hands make light work. Sit down and discuss important dos and don’ts with all members. If possible, give them a written set of instructions each to make the entire process easier for everyone around.

Limit the Weight of Goods Being Moved

Keep track of the weight of each box, 25 kg for small boxes and 40 kg for large ones are usually considered manageable to carry and move.

Most times moving companies charge by weight so avoid unnecessary things. Get rid of unnecessary and heavy goods. Have a garage sale for such things, sell them to your local second-hand store or simply give them away…get rid of clutter!

Cutting down the total number and weight of goods will effectively reduce your moving cost.

How to Choose a Moving Company

If you would much rather have somebody else pack for your move then look for reputed packers and movers online and in your local yellow pages. Most of them are very professional and offer their services at competitive prices. You could pack most items yourself and leave a few for the company.
Before you zero in on a moving company make time to call a few of them and ask about their services while you let them know about your requirements and specifications, if any. Ask for estimates from at least 3-4 moving companies and compare their services and cost estimates.

The new trend of “green” moving is fast catching on and in case you’d like to reduce your carbon footprint as you move then recyclable containers, bio fuel and what not are all available for the asking.

Factors Determining Moving Costs

•    Weight of the goods or the number of rooms
•    Distance between your old home to new homes
•    Efforts made in packing and unpacking of your goods
•    The time of year like summer, weekends or holidays are peak seasons
•    Services, costs and insurance
