Will My Life Insurance cover me if I work overseas?

As our marketplace becomes ever more global, individuals are more often finding opportunities to take working assignments overseas.

Students, interns, lower level managers and even experienced executives are traveling abroad for both short term and long term stints as international workers. One concern of individuals preparing to work overseas is whether their life insurance policy will continue to cover them while they are out of the country. Due to varying climates in other countries the answer is generally no-your policy will not cover you. This is almost a guarantee if you are venturing into a country already declared a war zone by the United States or one where there have been travel warnings issued. United States issued standard life insurance policies never cover acts of war or political unrest and it may be prudent to consider purchasing international life insurance.

Most standard life insurance policies are “accidental death and dismemberment” insurance policies and they are very different from international life insurance policies. Each plan varies in their scope of coverage and plans vary by insurance company so it is unwise to assume that any previous coverage you have had will be similar to the coverage you are shopping for now. Prices also vary from one type of coverage to another. Some policies are trip specific, meaning, if you are going to a peaceful country and buy coverage specified for a certain itinerary you may not be covered if you suddenly change routes and go to a more volatile situation.

The number one step to take before going overseas for an assignment is to seek a qualified insurance adviser that can help walk you through the complex differences between policies. You will want to ensure you have purchased enough coverage to make sure your family will be cared for in case of your untimely demise. Even if your accidental death and dismemberment coverage will follow you overseas it may not continue to cover you in the event of terrorist or other political attack and additional coverage may be necessary. It would be careless to assume that your employer will provide you with international life insurance. Many employers offer AD&D life insurance as a benefit to their employees. One might be left to believe that this same employer, sending them overseas for work, would adjust their life insurance policies to cover the international workers. Never make this assumption and take time to speak with your employer about your policy.

Venturing outside of the United States can be an exciting adventure for anyone. No one wants to think that anything negative is going to happen but in our ever changing global environment one must be prepared for anything. Foreign countries turn volatile quickly; we are not all deeply familiar with political, social and economic nuances of other cultures and even in the most peaceful of circumstances accidents happen. A responsible expatriate worker will seek out a qualified insurance agent to review their policy and discuss any additions that need to be purchased.
