Making life abroad easier with ExpatFinder, the comparison website for expats in The United States.

Allergies in Austria

An allergy is defined as a hypersensitivity reaction to any agent called an allergen. This hypersensitivity can be genetic or due to exposure to factors an affected person is not used to.

In Austria, expats may have the tendency to develop allergies, particularly because their bodies have yet to physiologically adapt to their new environment. But with the right precautions and international health insurance in Austria, everything should be in control.

There are five common allergens in this country and these include dust mites, animal hair, insecticides, food and mildew. Allergic reactions can range from hay fever to atopic eczema to asthma and, in worst cases, anaphylactic shock where a person could die due to respiratory or circulatory failure. These conditions are highly manageable, however, as long as one takes the time to know the things that cause him to exhibit allergic reactions and to avoid exposure as much as possible.

One thing that can make a big difference in the management of allergies is for an affected individual to open up to treatment. Many people think allergies are not serious but they do have the potential to be fatal when ignored. Treatments can range from antihistamine to immunotherapy which aims to build a person's resistance against certain allergens. As a general precaution, a person can try to achieve better health by eating nutritious food and getting the right amount of exercise to build his immune system. And because health care in  the country is of high quality, not to mention there are good providers of private health insurance in  Austria, expats will rarely have difficulty managing allergies.
