For expats, especially those who have just arrived, it is important to keep these numbers handy just in case they need to dial any of the said hotlines.
For fire emergencies, the number to dial is 122, for an ambulance, 144, for police assistance, 133 and for poison-related cases, one may dial 4064343. For those dealing with car breakdowns, the numbers to call are 120 or 123.
Those who are feeling sick and couldn't get anybody to help them get medical help, 142 may be dialed as well as 141. Outdoor hobbyists who are lost in their tracks while mountain climbing or camping can call for rescue at 140. Those who just need to call somebody back home or even anyone in the country of Austria can call 11990 for directory inquiries.
For expats who have just moved with children, one number that may prove to be important is 147. This is not an emergency hotline but this is something kids can call if they're feeling overwhelmed by any pressing issue at any time in their young lives. Sometimes, issues can be related to adjustments to a new environment, having just moved from another country, or just about anything from friendships to child abuse.
Fact is, expats in Austria get all the help they need when they need it. And these numbers can prove to be useful and even lifesaving.
