Health care in Bahrain

Health care in Bahrain is as promising as its economy, which is the fastest growing in the Arab world. The Bahraini government ensures a premium health service for its people in recognition of the fact that they are responsible for the nation's growth.

HealthcareThe health care system hinges on highly skilled, world-class medical practitioners and the latest medical research, state-of-the-art facilities and newly discovered diagnostic techniques that all work together to provide the highest quality of health care to citizens and expatriates.

At present, the country's existing health care consists of three full service private hospitals manned by both Bahraini and expatriate medical professionals trained abroad; four government hospitals; 19 health centers; five government maternity hospitals; and various private practitioners with varied specializations from neurosurgery to dentistry.

Medical care is afforded to every resident of the country through public medical services that are often free. Although hospitals are equipped with both human and technical resources to provide first-rate care to its patients, the health sector is adopting the US and Western Europe patterns of extending assistance to those in need by providing private medical services in the form of health insurance, which are more needed by Bahrainis.

The evolution of the Bahraini health care sector has a lot to do with early American Mission hospitals, which offered free medical care to those who couldn't afford it. Today, the organization no longer offers free services but its legacy continues in the government's existing health care structure that extends free or affordable health care to both citizens and expatriates.

The government itself is actively pursuing the development of the medical sector by inviting new players who can positively contribute to its growth. Investors are required to coordinate with the Ministry of Health which oversees all health-related affairs, including pharmaceuticals and licensing. Pharmaceutical companies seeking to enter the Bahraini market will also need authorization from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry Investments and Environmental Affairs. This friendliness towards foreigners is another reflection of Bahrainis' openness to foreign influence aside from an obvious affinity for expats.

This type of scenario is particularly beneficial to foreigners who have come to Bahrain as expats. Due to the country's relatively small population, it is never a problem to consult a medical professional about an illness or condition. Doctors manning the hospitals have come from medical schools offshore where they have acquired advanced and specialized techniques; coupled with the most advanced medical equipment available and you can be sure that the highest possible quality of care is offered to all Bahraini residents whether they are locals or expats.
