Banking in Denmark

Denmark prides itself of having one of the most sophisticated banking systems in the world.

Expats will find that most banks offer online banking or e-banking that makes payment of bills and bank transfers very seamless and efficient. Among the many banks in Denmark are Danske Bank, Nykredit and Nordea.

Albeit a member state of the European Union, Denmark is one of the countries in Europe who did not commit to EU's single currency and kept their own currency which is known as "DKK" or Danish Krone. At times, DKK is informally referred to as "Danish crown" as (Krone means crown). The Krone is divided into 100 øre.

Obtaining a Danish bank account is simple. Expats with a residence permit are eligible to open a bank account; basic requirements needed are passports and Danish identification number (CPR). Expats have a choice of opening either a current account or deposit account.

Expats, just like everyone in Denmark, need to have a designated Easy Account (Nemkonto). An Easy Account is a normal bank account, but used as a public payment system for people working in Denmark for receiving wages from employers and receiving payments from Danish authorities (i.e. tax refunds, child subsidies, pensions, unemployment benefits, housing support, etc.).

Banks are open from 9am (or 9:30 am) to 5pm on working days (Mondays to Fridays), and will be open until 6pm every Thursday.

Credit cards (i.e. MasterCard, Visa, American Express, and Diners Club) are widely accepted throughout Denmark, as well as Eurocheque cards. Note that some small shops may not take foreign bank notes in large denominations.
