If you are into Electronic Gadgets, you might think that a holiday destination like Bali is not the right place to buy or bargain for the latest toys. Tech hubs like Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok dominate this area in Asia. In general, you are better off purchasing your new Laptop or Android Smartphone in one of those places. But thankfully, things are changing fast and the population of Bali (and its Expat Community) are getting more and more tech affine. This provides new opportunities...

It's, "Dumb Question of the Week" (as seen by my blog post title). As an American expat in Sweden, I get a lot of the same questions, you know, the "standards", but sometimes....sometimes I get doozies. Usually they'll come about once a week, depending on how social I am. This new theme will be mostly focused...

Munich has had a short lived summer and now each week fluctuates between not yet giving up on Summer and wanting to be Autumn. I love this weather... the biergartens are still open, the breeze is cool, and you could easily have a hot chocolate or an ice cream and be content. We opted for a gelato at Max-Weber Platz in Haidhausen. I refer to this area as 'Nachwuchsplatz' (offspring plaza), because I always feel like we're the only couple there without children. The sweet little Amorino shop...

A new rugby season dawns, and so I've promised myself that this year I am going to get as much rugby in as possible.... Recently I contacted the Bangkok Bangers (one of the better known expat rugby clubs in BKK) and they let me come and play vs Bangkok Japanese. Great team, over 30 turned up. 4 x 20 minutes (plus we had at least 30 minutes run around beforehand. This Pirate is shattered). Pleased to say that the Bangers were triumphant, but only just..... the Bangkok Japanese side were...

Last night I went to my first UFL game since living here. The only live football I have seen since being here was at the FIFA World Club Cup final between Barcelona and Estudiantes, so this was my first taste of UAE football. The biggest club in Abu Dhabi, Al Jazira, have recruited a British CEO - Phil Anderton. He is keen to engage the club more fully with the local population, especially the many many thousands of expat football fans who, like me, have never been to a local...

The title says it all. That is what I read a lot on Expat Blogs about Chile. I always wondered what is wrong with me why do I not see it, perhaps I am lucky' After living in Santiago for 2 years I might still see through pink lenses but I guess I might just see it differently. Chileans in my eyes are pleasant and friendly whilst often shy at first. My wife (who is an expat from Mexico) never complained about Chilenos apart from their unclear pronunciation and being highly organised and...

Yesterday, "anonymous" posted a comment that I found really interesting. It's a follow up to the comment about the joke among expats: Q: What's the difference between and expat and a racist'A: About three weeks...To turn it around, "anonymous" (same one or different') wrote this:"Injustice, stigma and discrimination against expats, which is institutionalised in Oman. Hence, an average expat is "perceived" racist by Omanis in the spirit of blaming expats for every ill of Omani society."I'm not...

Arctic tern, definitely a migrant This post has inspired a renewed interest recently, and I am interested in what other expats/immigrants/migrants think--not just about the post but the comments as well. If you care to take a look... go here: Expat or Immigrant'Unfortunately, this new comments system I am trialling has deleted all the previous comments across this site so only the most recent comments are on show--which is irritating because there were some really good comments about this...

Family at Cragside To balance yesterday's wild and windswept shots taken from the side of the Cheviot, the biggest of the The Cheviots, today I have some shots from the southern end of the Cheviots, in the valley at Cragside. Actually, this is more for my sense of fairness because as Expat Mum pointed out yesterday, there's more to the Cheviots than wild and barren landscapes!Stream at CragsideMore on Cragside another day, but suffice it to say for now that it is a fantastic place to...

Storks are said to bring the babies in Germany. The legend began during pagan times in Northern Germany when families would hope to have storks nest on their roof tops to bring fertility. Here a family's home is decorated for its newest addition. Many of the zoos around Germany, including the Hellabrunn Zoo here in Munich have stork habitats where visitors can hear them clapping their bills in between delivering babies to their new homes.

Occasionally in Munich department stores there will be a table where the bride and groom will place gifts they'd like to receive for their guests to purchase, however gift registries are not very common. Cold hard cash seems to be the gift of choice and finding a creative way to present it is sure to win points. Some fold bills into origami shapes, forms, or characters, while others painstakingly freeze or incorporate coins into ice or gelatin.
Visitors who don't enjoy stretching out of their comfort zone can always stop at McDonald's - the global fast food giant. They may be surprised to see several different items on the menu, including beer and for a limited time the 'Nürnburger' made with sausages. The HoWe wurst factory that supplies the sausages is owned by Uli Hoeneß former general manager and president of Bayern München. Munich loves beer, sausages, and football... it always comes full circle.
