Working in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is the European Union's financial capital which controls the region's monetary policies. The rise of its various industries now paves the way for its consistent economic growth, and the opening of many positions for foreigners. Competition can be stiff, however, language requirements can be an issue. Most employers require knowledge of French and German for one to be hired.

The banking and insurance industries are hiring the most number of foreigners these days and business analysts, audit managers and other financial positions are high on demand. The educational requirements are high as well and those who have the longest relevant experience are usually preferred than neophytes.

The Information Technology industry is another sector that is opening up to foreign applicants and positions available are mostly for computer programmers and engineers.

Working in Luxembourg is always serious and formal business. Basic business etiquette calls for coming to work in formal attire and addressing colleagues formally with a Ms. or a Mr. before the person's surname. One can be more casual, however, with colleagues who have becomes friends. But in business functions, formality is always expected. Punctuality is also important and anyone who may be late for even five minutes is expected to give a warning.

Working hours in Luxembourg can be flexible, but the standard work week runs for 40 hours and overtime pay is required by law for time rendered beyond this limit. Cost of living in Luxembourg is generally comfortable. The Luxembourg workforce is paid generously, although taxes can be high. Employers usually compensate for this by offering great remuneration packages to employers.

Overall, working or living in Luxembourg is one to look forward to when one is equipped with the right skills, language, knowledge and experience for the right job.
