Health Care in Malaysia

As a fast rising economy, Malaysia has been undergoing rapid changes in its health care system.

HealthcareThis evolution began with a departure from the traditional methods of treatment known to the Chinese, Malay and other ethnic groups to the entry of modern, state-of-the-art medical and diagnostic solutions.

At present, the health care system is divided into public and private sectors but both are working together to ensure an adequate coverage for all residents, including citizens, migrants and even tourists who happen to fall ill during their visit.  To improve the performance of medical practitioners in the nation, there have been significant tweaks made in the current education system offered by medical schools. Foreign medical practitioners are also being invited to join and help sustain the energy that has been making the Malaysian health care a positive force in today's society.

Residents are lucky to have a government that is fully dedicated to health care needs.  With the heightened drive to propel Malaysian health care up to international standards, the network of clinics and hospitals and the medical personnel who man them all over the country have been strengthened. The Ministry of Health has been a very critical component of this wave of development as it continues to lobby for even more improvements.  One of its more successful efforts has been a project that enables doctors to reach out to patients in remote areas, diagnose illnesses and even prescribe medications with the help of telephone-assisted technology.

It took a considerable amount of time before Malaysia could be considered a medical tourist destination, but it has certainly now achieved such a renowned status. This is thanks to government efforts and a competent body of medical staff whose wide expertise in cardiology, gastroenterology, general surgery, ophthalmology, screenings, orthopedics, plastic surgery and dentistry is proven.   Practitioners in Malaysia are mostly the products of foreign medical education who have returned to the country to serve the local communities.  This is not to discredit, however, the locally graduated doctors who have skills and knowledge on par with the global medical community.

The Malaysian government places great importance on the health system for all its residents, evident in its 5% budget allocation for the year.

The nation's rising population has caused health authorities to make radical changes to improve the entire system; specifically in the building and equipping of new hospitals and renovating older ones, the expansion of small health care facilities such as polyclinics and beefing up its telephone-assisted program that makes health care accessible to those in far-flung areas. These efforts have been underway since 2007 and have so far produced tangible, positive results.

Anyone who wishes to make a home of Malaysia will find that health care is not a cause for worry as the government implements a very dependable health care system that takes care of all who live in the country, whether citizen, migrant, expat or tourist.
