Education Services in Malaysia

The Malaysian Government's Ministry of Education provides free public school in Malaysia for all primary school and secondary school students in the country. The Ministry operates public schools where the language of instruction is Malay, Chinese or Tamil in order to accommodate the various major communities living in the country. All Malaysian public school students across the entire nation must wear the same school uniforms. Kindergarten is not a requirement in Malaysia, and it is usually privately run, but parents may send their children between the ages of 3 and 6 to kindergarten. Universities in Malaysia are overseen by their own distinct Government Ministry, the Ministry of Higher Education.

The Malaysian public school year begins in the month of January, and continues on until late November, subtracting holidays and other non school days, instruction is expected to continue for at least 190 days of the year. The emphasis of the primary curriculum is on the Malay (or Chinese or Tamil) language, English and Maths, though students also receive instruction in Science, Local Studies, and Living Skills. In secondary school, students can choose to study in additional optional areas such as science, humanities, technical or vocational subjects, or Islamic studies.
