Basics of banking in Kuala Lumpur

There are local and international banks you can bank with in Malaysia. Banks are usually open from 9.30am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, and Saturday 9.30am to 11.30am.

When opening a bank account, you will be required to submit your passport and employment visa or a letter from the company which you’re working for as proof of your identity. Some banks require a minimum deposit of RM1500 for the opening of an account.

Cash and credit card are the most common forms of payment modes in Malaysia. For bill payments, it would be faster to do it via Internet or telephone banking as many banks offer this service. This saves time in having to stand in long queues and saves sending checks in the post. There are also many ATMs around where you can also deposit cash, update your passbook and pay bills in addition to withdrawing cash.
