Healthcare in Kuala Lumpur

Malaysia has become a health destination resulting in an increasingly popular and booming medical tourism field. Kuala Lumpur offers competitively priced medical services with competent medical professional staff.

As the capital of the Tiger State, Kuala Lumpur continues to uphold the country’s reputation as one of the best countries in the world when it comes to healthcare. In fact, Kuala Lumpur is rapidly becoming a hot spot for medical tourism, and in 2016 alone, more than 1 million tourists travelled to this city to experience world-class medical treatment and facilities. Along with George Town in Penang, KL is also named as a major medical centre that services international airlines from all over the world. Kuala Lumpur is known for its world-class plastic surgery. Other prominent services include dentistry, gastroenterology, screenings, general surgery, orthopaedics, and ophthalmology.

Importance of Private Insurance

The majority of foreign nationals use private healthcare. Private healthcare can be expensive if the insurance does not include outpatient care; however, the cost is still relatively cheaper than Singapore. There are numerous private clinics, which are reasonably priced for minor illnesses and immunisations. Visiting a local doctor costs approximately USD$5 while check up with a specialist can go up to USD$30.

While most employers provide group insurance, coverage might not include outpatient care. A reliable international health insurance is recommended prior to relocation since there is no welfare healthcare system in place for foreigners.

Medicines and Pharmacies

Medicines are widely available in major cities such as Kuala Lumpur but expats must be aware that Malaysia has strict laws on narcotics that encompass prescription drugs. Those who are planning on bringing medicines from their home country will be allowed to do so as long as there is a letter from the prescribing doctor. The amount of medication being brought to Kuala Lumpur shouldn’t exceed three months’ worth of supply while non-prescription drugs such as painkillers have no limit. Each person bound to this city can only carry no more than five items.

Kuala Lumpur also imposes a ‘pain-killer law’ whereas pharmacies are allowed to refuse to sell painkillers if there is no prescription. Pharmacies in the capital are mostly manned with English speaking personnel and are trained to provide basic medical advices. Pharmacies are found almost everywhere in Kuala Lumpur. There are also some that are located in health clinics which offer overnight care with a doctor on site.
