Mexico, located in Northern America, lies between the United States to the north and Belize and Guatemala to the Southeast. This country of friendly people, delectable spicy cuisine, art and archeology, pyramids, museums, superb beaches, interesting architecture, jungles, and interesting activities such as dolphin, and whale birthing viewings has made Mexico the 7th top international tourist destination. Transport within the country is best by bus, car or air. While English is commonly spoken in the border areas with the US and in the tourist destinations, alongside Spanish and Mexico's many indigenous languages, in other areas, it would be helpful to have a working knowledge of some Spanish. You Say Tomato, I Say Jitomate...

Comparing life in Mexico to life in the United States is like comparing apples to oranges.  But I have been in Mexico for so long that I have pretty much forgotten all about those differences.   Then there are days like this Tuesday when I'm reminded, not so much about the differences in lifestyle, but about some of the small cultural differences.   Just before going to bed on Tuesday night, Hope suddenly remembered a pending Geography assignment.  She had to make...

Going from visitor to friend in one breath

It was an evening of song, dance and food, where a group of visitors to New Zealand met for the first time and learnt some of the country’s indigenous culture. I had spent two weeks planning a cultural event for a group of  international students recently arrived in the country. The group had attended a traditional dance show/meal with a local Maori group and now it was time for their verdict. When the last song had been sung and the last tongue stuck out, I turned to my group of...

100+ Bridges Connecting The Hearts

More than 100 bridges have been built by a group of Viet Kieu (Vietnamese people living oversea) to serve the poor people living in rural areas of Vietnam.  Since 2004, this group has been consistently planning and building bridges for many villages and regions without costing the residents a single penny. While many of us are working to our last drop of sweat to deal with this stinky economy, these people have gone an extra mile to continue their hard work in building bridges for free.  Their...

Ask the Expat: Running in Turkey'

Alyssa has a good question for our Ask the Expat series:Hello! I saw your blog and wanted to ask about running in Turkey. I am a 26-year-old female training for a 10-mile race. I will be visiting Turkey for 12 days right in the middle of my training and wanted to ask about safety and appropriateness of me running through the streets in Turkey. I have been to other Middle Eastern countries where this is completely inappropriate. I would appreciate any advice you can give. Is this...

Guanajuato, Mexico - Do You Really Want to Know'

Check out NBC's Dateline Report on San Miguel de Allende Kidnappings--CLICK HERE***I decided I am going to survey mental health professionals regarding the issue of why Gringos move to Mexico, become Gringolandians, and then live according to this idea that they've arrived in Heaven on Earth, Shangri-La, and Nirvana where nothing bad can possibly dwell. If I can get responses I will let you know the results. There has got to be some psychiatric thing going on when such masses of Gringos move...

Tortillas de Maiz

The most important part of any meal here in Mexico is the tortillas.  Corn tortillas are served at breakfast, lunch and dinner. For those of us living in Mexico, we are a bit spoiled.  Every town has atleast one tortilleria making fresh corn tortillas daily for the whole town. When I first moved to Mexico, most of the women made their way to the tortilleria just before the mid-day meal, to stand in a very long line waiting for warm, fresh corn tortillas.  This daily activity was...

Once again, Bangkok Quilt Group contributed 4 quilts to Habitat for Humanity. International School Bangkok students went on a week without walls trip, one group to Udon Thani and one group to Chiang Mai to build houses. Each family was presented with a quilt to welcome them into their new homes. Thank you to the Manga group for finishing the quilts by tying them with embroidery floss so nicely! And thanks to me for sewing the quilts.
