Workinq in Qatar

Qatar is one of the biggest exporters of oil and petroleum products in the world- its petroleum companies offer very attractive job opportunities, especially for expatriates. In fact, these companies are highly regarded for the generous compensation given to expats who have moved to Qatar.

Sales, banking, finance and medical jobs are also in demand in this country, where a maximum of 48 working hours per week is mandated by law. Friday and Saturday are usually given for the weekendCost of living in Qatar is very reasonable, compared to some other gulf countries. Since Qatar does not impose taxes, living in Qatar is very convenient and expats can keep a good portion of their earnings to be sent to their families back home or to bulk up a savings account.

In a typical Qatari workplace, business etiquette dictates that expat workers should show willingness to learn. However, for important and formal documents, expats are advised to have an Arabic translation for easier communication. Building trust is very important for Arabs. It is a bad idea to be pushy at work as locals do not appreciate this type of behavior. Small chit chats and getting to know the person is important for a successful business transaction. Qatar, no matter how urbanized its cities are, is still conservative at heart. This conservatism is shown in workers' business attire. When meeting new colleagues or business partners, expat men should remember that physical contact with women, even in business, such as shaking hands, is not allowed in this country.

When working in Qatar, an expatriate can expect great material reward, both financially and culturally.
