Culture Shock in Singapore

The city-state is quite literally at the crossroads of many cultures. The multiethnic environment of Singapore is very evident due the presence of Chinese, Malays and Indian communities throughout the island. Another historical fact to consider is that Singapore was once part of the British Empire.

Given that, it is better to take into consideration the different customs and practices of the various ethnic groups that compose the population. The cosmopolitan culture of Singapore can be seen in all aspects of life- from language and religion to food and sport.

Most Singaporeans are bilingual-usually English and another language. A local variant of the English language (Singlish) is spoken by a large number of its population.

Singapore, like most developed countries, is a secular state. The main religions in the island are Buddhism, Christianity and Islam. Religious tolerance is very much encouraged.

Perhaps the best way to experience the country's multiethnic background is through its cuisine. Being at the crossroads of many cultures does have perks.

Popular sporting events in Singapore include football, basketball, badminton, squash, tennis, and swimming, to name a few. Also catching on are bowling, table tennis, snooker, computer games, and martial arts like silat and taekwondo.

Expats should expect a relaxed albeit sophisticated environment when living in Singapore.
