Having a Baby in Singapore

Thanks to its world-class medical facilities, having a baby in Singapore won't be a problem— regardless if the mother is a resident, an expat, or a tourist.

Expecting mothers in Singapore usually have to make an important decision regarding how she will deal with her pregnancy- does she want a ‘high-intervention' pregnancy closely monitored by an OB or a more natural approach?  Getting professional advice from your OB about your pregnancy is always the best choice, regardless of what approach you choose.

Once you've made your choice, you can now go to any major hospital and/or maternity ward that caters to expecting mothers. Some of the most popular hospitals include the Thomson Medical Centre, Mount Elizabeth Hospital, Gleneagles Hospital, Raffles Hospital, National University Hospital, and Kandang Kerabu Women and Children's Hospital. You may get routine services such as blood tests, genetic tests, and ultrasound from such hospitals.

When it is time to deliver your baby, hospitals usually charge a one-off fee for OB packages. These packages include prenatal and delivery services. Such packages go for around S$5000 each.

It is wise to have medical insurance before you get pregnant. Most insurance companies cover the pregnancy costs as well as extra costs that may result from any medical condition. Expat mother must make sure to purchase an international or a private health insurance that can cover maternity cost.

The hospitals will also assist in the registration of the newborn.
