Activities for Kids in Sweden

The Swedish education system provides high standards of education for free to Swedes and foreigners alike. School starts at the age of six and is compulsory from the age of 7 to 16.

Since the medium of instruction in state schools is Swedish, most expats enroll their kids in international schools in Sweden. There are a number of international schools that follow the British or American curriculum, but some also adhere to the Swedish curriculum. These international schools are mostly located in major cities and larger towns.

Enrolment procedures vary while some of the popular schools may have a waiting list. Fees vary on the student's resident status. Children of expats who hold a personal ID in Sweden will be eligible for state-subsidized fees. On the other hand, parents can opt to enroll their children in an independent school or a private school in Sweden, run by corporations or independent bodies.

After school or during school holiday, kids can enjoy the other side of Sweden, the outdoors. Sweden's mountains are mesmerizing enough to get kids excited in various activities such as skiing, skating, dog-sledding, hiking, trekking, and ice fishing during winter.

In summer and spring, kids can make the most of Sweden's beaches for waterskiing and windsurfing. Other popular activities in summer are trekking, mountaineering, hiking, cycling, canoeing, and sailing. Sweden is a perfect place for fishing with the whole family with its variety of fishing venues.
