Pet Import Regulations in the USA

For people who have pets, expatriation is just not complete without taking their furry family members into consideration for the big move.

Pet relocation then becomes a primary concern for most pet-owners who plan to expatriate to another country. Americans are a pet-loving society. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that relocating pets to the USA will be as easy as a walk in the park.

Pet relocation services to the USA are widely available, and they can provide you the best means of pet transport.

Common household pets like cats and dogs are inspected right away at the port of arrival. The pet must be accompanied by a certificate of rabies vaccination signed by a licensed veterinarian. The certificate should contain the specifics of the vaccination like the dog's identification, the date the vaccine was administered, the expiration date and type of vaccine used.

A rabies certification is not necessary in the US territories of Guam and American Samoa.

One must also be able to present a health certificate signed by a licensed veterinarian confirming that the dog being imported into the country was inspected five days prior to arrival and is found free of screwworms.

The USDA (US Department of Agriculture) Animal Import Centers also strictly control the import of pet birds into the country. All pet birds that would be brought in to US territory must have a health certificate issued within 30 days prior to entry to the US.

Be aware that a fee of 40 USD may be requested by the quarantine facility prior to the pet's importation to the US.

To ensure a smoother transport of your pet and agreement to pet import regulations you may want to avail of a pet relocation service to the USA.
