Making life abroad easier with ExpatFinder, the comparison website for expats in The United States.

Renting in Boston

Being home to Harvard and MIT universities, Boston is considered to be one of the most expensive places to live in America.

Although the cost of living in Boston is high, there is a steady stream of new residents coming to live in the city. Finding a place to rent in Boston is difficult due to the annual influx of university students. Rental accommodation arrangements should be made at least a month before relocating.

Different levels of luxury are available in different neighborhoods. Accommodation near downtown Boston is the most expensive. For expats tight on the rent budget, neighborhoods of Allston, Brighton, Charlestown, Dorchester, East Boston and Jamaica Plain are viable options.

A typical monthly rental contract for a luxury apartment with two bedrooms costs USD$1,900.00 and a one bedroom apartment in older buildings costs USD$1,000.00. Tenants should expect to pay the security deposit which is equal to four month's rent.

Since property and rental are always in demand, expats must exhaust resources online to find a good flat to rent. There are many online sites that provide a complete listing of properties for rent or one can buy the local newspaper to search for a place. Getting the services of an estate agent can be to the tenant's advantage; however, one should note that agencies charge more than a month's rent as commission.
