Located on the River Isar, north of the Bavarian Alps, Munich is the capital city of Bavaria in Germany and the country's third largest city. Considered the most desirable city to live in by the Germans, this popular tourist destination is an elegant city that is a bustling media and high-tech centre that combines its sophistication with its rustic charm and small-town feel with its museums, gardens, bars and restaurants. The city is home to magnificent neo-baroque buildings that contrast with modern glass and steel buildings. Street performers entertain crowds at Marienplatz in the city centre. The city, home to the Olympics in 1972, is best known for its festival held every September -- Oktoberfest, the Fasching carnival, and its many beer cellars, and the Residenz, the former royal palace on Odeonplatz.

At first glance it seems a bit strange. In one of Munich's most prominent squares, Odeonsplatz, there are statues of war leaders who oversaw two of the more significant losses in Bavaria's military history. Pictured is Karl Philipp von Wrede, who was defeated by Napoleon in 1814, and on the opposite arch is Johann Tserclaes, who was defeated by King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden. But upon further review, you find that both were quite decorated, and had successful...

I am about due for my annual rant about how I must learn German (see how I used the very German 'must'?), followed by feverish activity to plan how that will happen, followed by less feverish actions to make it happen, followed by yet another admission of defeat. But I'll hold that thought for another day because something else is on my mind.It is nearly one year since I moved back to Munich. I have no clue how that went so fast. When I was getting ready to move back, I made this list about...

This post is setting the record straight. I wrote the post Expat's Bad Day in an attempt to let other expats know that they are not alone, we all have 'those days'. I was drawing on my own experiences as well as experiences I have heard from other expat friends and read on other expat blogs. So before you kind, generous, truly thoughtful readers worry about me too much... I offer you the Expat's Good Day post! This post is more personal. It is also drawn on others' stories but I have...

Alyssa has a good question for our Ask the Expat series:Hello! I saw your blog and wanted to ask about running in Turkey. I am a 26-year-old female training for a 10-mile race. I will be visiting Turkey for 12 days right in the middle of my training and wanted to ask about safety and appropriateness of me running through the streets in Turkey. I have been to other Middle Eastern countries where this is completely inappropriate. I would appreciate any advice you can give. Is this...

Cheerios: Unbelievably expensive comfort food When an expat has a bad day it may be a normal bad day (food off because someone left the fridge door open all night, cat sick on the keyboard, no hot water for showers for smelly, moody teenagers) or it may be a uniquely Expat Bad Day, the kind your 'local friends' might struggle to understand.A Expat Bad Day falls into one or more categories. Below are some from my experience as well as other friends and bloggers (you are not alone!):1) The...

This photo of a stencil sprayed on a wall in Munich is by far the most popular image on my Flickr stream. According to the stats it currently has more than 10,000 views, which is around 3 times more than the 2nd ranking image (sea cucumbers in South Korea). I’m surprised. I took the photo with the crappy built-in camera on a mobile phone, and I didn’t think it had come out very well.

There's nothing like rolling up a Grand Piano and supporting band out into the center of Marienplatz. I was once told that Munich was a city of real sophistication, primarily because it has several classical music companies. Well anytime we can move from ?Chrome Man' (those irritating people who spray paint themselves and stand like a statue) to a classical concert in the middle of the city's busiest square ? they have my vote. It was great to see the reactions to those...

I apologize for the lack of regularity in the posts, but in all honesty we just returned to Munich, only to be bombarded with another snow flurry. We had hoped that after 3 weeks, Spring would show up ? like where we travelled. But no such luck. More below freezing temperatures, and more snow, much like the East Coast of the US. At least the sun came out later in the day, and it cleared off. Good news is that the temperatures are supposed to inch higher each day for the next 10 days. ...
