Health Insurance in Austria

Listed as 9th best in health insurance by the World Health Organization, Austria provides top-of-the-line medical care to expats and residents alike. Almost 99% of the nation’s population is covered by Austria’s statutory health insurance, and this applies for nearly all types of occupations, independent of the level of their income. During their first work week, foreign nationals who live in Austria must enrol in a healthcare program by registering with a district health insurance (Gebietskrankenkasse). Normally, employers will make salary deductions to pay for the health insurance system on behalf of the employee.
