Expat Housing Services in Bahrain
It is impossible under Bahraini law for expats to own land, which means they must rent an apartment or villa. Housing will be either urban or in the suburbs, since the desert is mainly inhabited by Bedouin and camels. Much construction is being done in Bahrain at present, and finding a rental there is not difficult.
Native Bahrainis prefer to live in villas with extended families, but expat workers will usually rent in separate compounds or in apartments. Larger compounds for foreigners will include a shop, restaurant, swimming pool, tennis court, gym, play area for children, and majlis or meeting hall for visitors. Most rentals will be unfurnished, but might include kitchen equipment such as a fridge, and free satellite access, including CNN and BBC. Rents start at around $750 per month for a one bedroom apartment.
A furnished apartment is about 25 percent more expensive, and a serviced apartment - including cleaning, linen, and laundry service - is 30 percent more expensive than an un-serviced one. Air conditioning may or may not be included. A long term lease will be for a year, while short term leases are in months. An expat will need to have their work sponsor also sign their rental lease.
