Education Services in Costa Rica

Costa Rica is among the first nations in the modern world to establish a free, tax funded, comprehensive and compulsory public educational system. The Costa Rican public school system is part of the purview of the Ministry of Education, and it dates back all the way to the year 1869.

Around 95% of the populace can read and write the Spanish language, giving Costa Rica one of the highest literacy rates in all of Latin America. Attendance is required from age 6 and through the eleventh grade. However it is available to all residents of Costa Rica for free from the age of 2 years.

Among the objectives of the Ministry of Education is the fostering of an aware citizenry that is both responsible to humanity and aware of the rights in a democracy, while versatile with respect to preserving its longstanding heritage and traditions. With less funding for public schools now, parents have extra fees to pay for food, uniforms, school books, and sometimes transportation as well. There is also the option of private schools in Costa Rica for those who can afford the tuition, and with an increasing dropout rate from public schools, the popularity of private schools is increasing.
