In Cyprus, there is an excellent public school system of primary and high schools, as well as a number of private schools. The amount spent on education by the Cypriot government is approximately 7 percent of the budget. 30% of Cypriots go to a university, usually one elsewhere in Europe, or in North America. This means Cyprus has the best educated populace of any European Union country.

 

There are several universities located in Cyprus as well, both private and national, such as the University of Cyprus in Nicosia. Getting into a Cypriot University has nothing to do with high school grades, which are ignored, and is determined instead by passing an entrance exam. The oldest primary school in Cyprus is the Faneromeni School, established in the year 1857 by the Archbishop Makarios I, who also built many other schools on the island. It is still a public school to this day, although now it is coeducational, and no longer an all girls school.

 

The University of Cyprus was first founded in 1989, and was ready to admit students by 1992. It has already built up a huge University library with hundreds of thousands of titles, including a collection on Cypriot studies, and has made them accessible on the website.
