Question in Family and Children
Question : How can I keep our cultural heritage intact with my child while we are living in this country/city?
Answer from Dr. Albert Bonfil, expert in Family Life
It is important to maintain cultural values while simultaneously teaching your child about the values and norms of her new country. Every child will have to negotiate acculturation, and if not supported by parents, she will likely err on the extreme of rejecting her native culture in favor of the new one or vice versa, either of which can be unhealthy with regard to identity development. When you sense your child is trying to make sense of a cultural disparity, it can be very helpful to talk openly about it, presenting the pro's and con's of each view, and helping your child come to her own synthesis.
