Expat Finance Services in France

The currency in France since 2002 is the Euro. In 2002 it replaced the French Franc which had been the nation's official currency since 1795. France is one of the twelve original European Union nations to adopt the euro, represented by the twelve stars on the design of the euro coins and notes. Coins are issued in one and two euros, notes for 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros.

Anyone may open a resident account in France after staying in the country 3 months, provided they can prove this. Others may still get non resident accounts which are similar but do not come with a credit card or any overdraft protection. Credit and debit cards in France are very popular and the major ones are accepted everywhere, with 24 hour ATM machines a common sight. They can be used with only a pin number being necessary. In some French stores there is a minimum purchase limit for credit cards of around 15 euros. There are also annual fees for using the cards.

Bank checks are also widely used and accepted by the French, cost nothing extra to write, and are not expected to bounce, as this is considered a serious crime in France.
