Driving in Hong Kong

To be able to drive in Hong Kong, expats who plan to live in Hong Kong for more than six months and who are holding a resident or employment visa must obtain a valid Hong Kong driving license.

This license may be issued without retaking a driving test if you have a valid overseas license released by a country approved by the Hong Kong Transport Department. The Hong Kong driving license is valid for ten years.

International and Local License

You can only apply for an international driving license if you are a Hong Kong resident and hold a valid Hong Kong driving license. It is, therefore, advisable to apply for an international driving license in your home country before relocating. The international driving license is valid for the first six months of your stay in Hong Kong.

Many expats do not own a car in Hong Kong due to the high cost of buying and maintaining one. Parking in the city is often challenging and it is also expensive. Often it is easier and faster to get around by public transport as it is readily available, efficient and cheap. The subway, buses and taxis cover a wide network. Taxis are also available 24 hours a day. If you decide to buy one, second-hand cars offer good value for money.
