Expat Housing Services in Hong Kong

Most people in Hong Kong live in high rise buildings. Rent is very expensive, the cheapest studio flat is around 8000 Hong Kong dollars a month. A cheaper option is sharing an apartment flat with other tenants, which can be as low as HK $2500 monthly, depending on location and provided amenities. Few in Hong Kong can afford to rent houses or even townhouses because the rent is exorbitant.

Foreigners in Hong Kong will usually find rental accommodation through a real estate agent. Finding a property without a real estate agent is much more difficult as landlords in Hong Kong do not like to deal directly with foreigners. Some landlords do not allow pets, others will make allowances for pets. The usual duration of the lease is for two years. Other management fees separate from rent are also charged to cover cleaning, security, maintenance, and more. A month’s rent is required as a holding deposit, and deposits can also be required for connecting gas, power and water.

A Hong Kong Identity Card and a letter from an employer are also requirements for renting. Renters in Hong Kong can get household insurance to cover their property or furniture in case of fire, theft, burst pipes, or typhoon.
