Expat Finance Services in Hong Kong

Although the People's Republic of China resumed sovereignty over Hong Kong from the British Commonwealth in 1997, Hong Kong has been allowed to retain its own currency, the Hong Kong Dollar, by agreement with the Chinese Government. The Hong Kong Dollar is still pegged to a value that is a fraction of the United States Dollar. Banknotes include the denominations of 10, 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000 Hong Kong Dollars.

 

Commission is usually charged for converting money, but banks in Hong Kong will offer their own customers free currency conversion. Hong Kong is a world banking center with many international banks from over 30 different countries. The most prominent and largest bank in Hong Kong is the Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation, HSBC. A Hong Kong identity card is required to open an account, and a proof of address such as a power bill, as well as at least HK $1000 for the opening balance. Some banks require foreigners to provide a passport and a letter from their employers.

 

In addition, American nationals are required to give their Social Security Number for IRS tax reporting purposes. Withdrawals can be made in Hong Kong Dollars at any ATM. The bank account comes with an EPS card which is like a debit card that can be used for shopping.
