Expat Finance Services in India

The currency used in India is the Indian rupee, which has a long history going back to the 1540s. Banknotes that are available include the 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 500, and 1000 rupee notes. A single rupee has little actual value and so prices are more likely to be measured in lakh, or 100 thousand rupees, or in crore, or 10 million rupees.

Currency will have to be converted in India, since it is against the law to take rupees out of India. The use of debit and credit cards as well as ATM machines in India is also on the rise. However, ATM machines are still scarce and difficult to find in many parts of India. Major worldwide cards will work, but sometimes there is a bank conversion fee charged by the ATM.

There are many banks in India but some of these are only local in scope. Foreigners can open bank accounts in India once they have a received a foreigner registration number. They also need to show their passport, visa, and proof of address. Nowadays, debit cards are issued along with bank accounts, credit cards can be applied for, and online banking is also an option in India.
