Expat Finance Services in New Zealand
The currency in New Zealand since 1967 has been the New Zealand dollar. In that year it replaced the previous currency, the New Zealand pound. It now comes in bank notes with the denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100. 1 and 2 dollar bank notes were discontinued in 1991 and replaced with coins.
Debit cards or EFTPOS cards, ATM machines, and credit cards all enjoy widespread usage in New Zealand. Some businesses may charge a small fee for use of an EFTPOS card. Major international credit cards are all accepted. Opening a bank account in New Zealand generally requires an opening balance of 200 to 500 dollars as well as two forms of ID. The bank account entitles the holder to an EFTPOS card, which is usable for payments or to withdraw cash at an ATM machine with a pin number.
There are typically many bank charges that are levied on accounts, including a charge for the use of a different bank's ATM machine. Annual fees on bank accounts usually run from about 20 to 100 dollars. Some banks in New Zealand offer credit cards with cash back or frequent flyer reward points. In fact, in 2001, the Bank of New Zealand found that its frequent flyer program was so popular that it had to lower its offer to a point for every two dollars instead of every one dollar spent on the card.
