Education Services in Portugal

The Portuguese government's Ministry of Education provides a state run public schooling system that is free; and an education whether it be public or private, is a requirement for all Portuguese residents up to the age of 18 years old. Higher Education on the other hand, falls separately within the purview of another Portuguese government cabinet ministry, the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Higher Education. Children who are living in Portugal can also attend either privately operated or public and free nursery schools, or kindergarten from the ages of 3 to 5 years old.

Among the subjects of study taken by students in a Portuguese school up to age 15 are: English, French, History, Geography, Information Technology, Theatre, Dance, Design, and Woodworking, besides others. In Portuguese schools, the grading system is based on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is the lowest possible grade, and a 3 is required to pass.

At the age of 15, students in Portugal move on to high school, where more courses are taken in a gamut of subjects, either 'general', for instance, social economics, social science, visual arts and literature, technology; or 'vocational', which includes computing, electronics, civil engineering, administration, and multimedia marketing.
