Expat Housing Services in Portugal
Many Portuguese own their own homes. There are also many foreigners who own homes in Portugal. In Portugal, there are two kinds of rental properties available: long term rentals and short term rentals. Rentals in the resort areas of Portugal tend to be furnished and short term while those in the other major cities are generally rented out unfurnished and long term with contracts of one year.
The short term rentals in Portuguese resort areas are usually much more expensive by the month and even more so by the week during peak tourist season, but often drop to half price during the low tourist season from October to April to as cheap as only 600 euros a month, or 300 a week.
Just as with renting an apartment, buying a property is far more expensive in the coastal resort areas of Portugal. A small studio apartment can be purchased there for around 90 thousand euros, while the price of a 4 bedroom detached villa can be as much as 900 thousand euros. It is cheapest in rural areas of Portugal where there is much farmland. One option for living in Portugal is with an international home exchange program in which Portuguese homeowners will actually trade their homes with homes in another country for a year.
