Expat Finance Services in Portugal

The currency used in Portugal since 2002 has been the Euro. In 2002 the euro replaced the Portuguese escudo which had been the official currency of Portugal since 1911. Portugal is one of the twelve original European Union nations to adopt the euro, which are represented by the twelve stars on the design of the euro coins and notes. Coins are issued for one and two euros, notes in the denominations of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 and 500 euros.


Banks in Portugal are subdivided into two categories, clearings banks and savings banks. There are ATM machines available throughout Portugal and international debit and credit cards can be used, although many Portuguese prefer to use cash. There are banks in Portuguese supermarkets that have automated telephone banking systems, but there are no drive-through bank services in the country.


Bank accounts can be opened at banks in Portugal by anyone over 18 with an ID and proof of Portuguese address. Accounts can also be opened at Portuguese banks abroad, the minimum deposit is usually around 250 euros. Writing a bounced check is a serious crime and can result in the loss of the checking account at Portuguese banks.
