Citizens of most countries can visit Singapore as a guest with a short term visa obtainable at the border, although there are a few countries whose nationals are required to get visas at a consulate beforehand. Visitors to Singapore must have sufficient funds and a return ticket in addition to their passports.

 

The short term visa is for a limited time only and can be renewed, although it is illegal to stay in Singapore longer than it allows. Those who wish to work in Singapore need a work visa. This can be one of many different types. The employment visa is for business professionals who will be earning at least 3000 Singapore dollars, and earning this amount entitles dependents of the visa holder to come to Singapore also. There are also entrepreneurial visas available for those who intend to start a large business in Singapore, as well as student visas for those who are attending a Singaporean school.

 

Spouses, parents, and children under 21 of Singapore residents, as well as some work visa holders, entrepreneurs and investors can apply for a Permanent Residence status while in Singapore. Males between the ages of 18 and 40 who gain Permanent Residence are liable to be conscripted into the Singapore military.
