Expat Finance Services in South Africa

The currency in South Africa since 1961 has been the South African rand. In that year it replaced the previous currency, the South African pound. It now comes in bank notes with the denominations of different colors depending on value - 10 (green), 20 (brown), 50 (red), and 100 rands (blue). Orange 200 rand bank notes were withdrawn from circulation in the year 2010 because of counterfeits.

The central banking authority in South Africa is the South African Reserve Bank. Besides this there are a variety of domestic and international banks operating in South Africa. Both residents and non residents can get South African bank accounts, provided they are over 18 years of age, have ID such as a passport and a utility bill or the like as proof of address.

Bank accounts open the door to getting a debit card or credit card, but ATM machines in South Africa are notoriously unreliable and may run out of cash, break down, or swallow a card. The maximum amount of rands that can be withdrawn from a South African ATM machine is usually 2000 rands. Online website banking is becoming more widely available, but many South Africans are cautious about using this service because of fears of computer hackers.
