Passport holding citizens of several nations, including the United States, do not need any permission to visit South Africa. The number of days they are allowed to visit South Africa can be 30, 90, or 120, depending on exactly which country they are from and also whether they have a regular or a diplomatic passport.

 

Nationals of Tanzania can visit South Africa without permission for 90 days, but only once a year. Those who are from any of the other countries do need permission to enter South Africa, or even to board an aircraft, in the form of a visa obtained in a South African consulate.

 

Those coming to work or live in South Africa also need visas regardless of what country they are from. Processing the visa usually takes around ten days. The fee is around 425 rand or about 47 US dollars. Even with a visa, it is the immigration official at the border or airport who determines who meets the basic qualifications for entry into South Africa, which are sufficient funds and a return ticket. Those who are not admitted into South Africa are refused entry and put on a return flight.
