Anyone coming into South Korea, even for a visit, must have a valid passport that is still good for six months. However, citizens of most nations do not need to get an entry visa beforehand if they are only coming as tourists. There are various different categories that determine which country’s citizens are allowed to visit and for how long.

 

Nationals of certain countries can only visit for 30 days with no visa, like the United States. On the other end of the spectrum, Canadians are allowed to visit as tourists with no visa for as long as six months. However, people staying in the country longer than 90 days should get an Alien Registration Certificate regardless. Those who are trying to get a permanent residence in South Korea need to qualify for a visa.

 

Getting Korean citizenship is much harder, and few can qualify for this other than those who are married to or related to South Korean citizens. Passing the citizenship test will require living in South Korea for at least five years, having much knowledge about Korean history and culture and also proficiency in speaking, writing and reading the Korean language, among other things.
